BENEFITS FOR

ELDERLY AND DISABLED PERSONS

Elderly and Disabled Homeowners Tax Relief:To qualify for this program, applicants must be 65 years of age or 100% Social Security Disabled, must own or have Life Use of the property, be responsible for the taxes and must reside at the property for which tax relief is being sought. Applications must be filed between February 1st and May 15th. Income limits cannot exceed $30,500 for single persons and $37,300 for married couples. Qualifying applicants may be eligible to receive up to 50% off their Real Estate taxes. This program must be reapplied for every two years.

To qualify for this program, applicants must submit to the Assessors Office all proof of income received for the previous calendar year. Applicant must provide a copy of their Federal Income Tax Return, if filed or all year end statements of income, plus their Social Security 1099 Statement.

Elderly and Disabled Renters Rebate: To qualify for this program, the applicant must be 65 years of age or 100% Social Security Disabled.Applications must be completed at the Assessors Office between May 15th and September 15th. Applicants must submit proof of all income received and all rent and utilities paid, during the previous calendar year. The maximum income limits are: $30,500 for single persons and $37,300 for married couples. The maximum allowable benefit is $700 for single persons and $900 and for married couples. Annual filing is required.

Tax Relief for Deferral of 100% Real Property Taxes for Certain Elderly Homeowners.

To qualify for the Tax Relief Deferral program, the applicant must be 65 years of age, must own and reside at the property for which tax relief is being sought. Qualifying income must not exceed $16,200 for single persons and $20,000 for married couples.The benefit is a 100% tax deferral after all state and local exemptions.

Social Security Disability Exemptions:An exemption in the amount of 1,000 is available to applicants who are 100% Social Security Disabled. To qualify for this exemption, applicant must submit proof of disability (TPQY). Applications for this benefit must be filed with the Assessors Office prior to January 31st. Annually filing is not required.

Local Social Security Disability Exemptions:An additional disability exemption in the amount of 1,000 is available to applicants who qualify for State Disability Exemption (previously described). To qualify for this exemption, applicant must submit proof of income not to exceed $30,500 for single and $37,300 for married couples. Applications for this benefit must be filed with the Assessors Office prior to January 1st. Annually filing is required.

Blind Exemptions: An exemption in the amount of 3,000 may be available to persons who have received a Certificate of Legal Blindness issued by the State of Connecticut. In order to receive this exemption, the certificate must be on file with Assessors Office prior to January 31st.

This is a one time filing.

Local Blind Exemptions: An additional exemption in the amount of 2,000 may be available to those who have qualified for the State Blind Exemption.To qualify, applicant’s income cannot exceed $30,500 for single and $37,300 for married couples. Annual filing is required.
