Membership Information

The Dennis Malone Aquatic Center is located at 325 Mix Street in Bristol, CT. The facility operates year round providing numerous swimming activities that the whole family can enjoy. Memberships are required for all swim sessions and for swim team, but not to take classes. The membership period for 2010-2011 will run from September 1, 2010 until August 31, 2011.

Memberships are not prorated

Memberships for the Dennis Malone Aquatic Center are available for purchase at the pool weekdays from 7:00a.m. until 9:00p.m., and on the weekends from 1:00p.m. until 6:00p.m.

Memberships allow individuals to participate in the following appropriate swim sessions: Family Swim, Adult Swim, General Swim, Lap Swim and Senior Swim. The membership fee does not include swim lessons or any other specialized swim program that has a fee.

General Swim is open to all with a membership card. During the family swim, families are encouraged to swim together. Adult Swim is for adult members (18+). Senior swim is for senior members (65+) only. Lap Swim is for any member wishing to swim laps.

*The Dennis Malone Aquatic Center now has an A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrillator) on site.

DAILY GUEST FEES

Guests can enjoy the pool with the payment of a guest fee, which allows access for the entire day. The daily fees are as follows:

Adults- $7.00 (ages 18-64)

Seniors- $6.00 (ages 65+)

College- $6.00 (must show valid college I.D.)

Children- $3.00 (under 18)

CITY OF BRISTOL POOL RULES

1. Proper swimming attire must be worn in the pool. -Cut-offs or T-shirts are not allowed in the pool.

2. Disposable diapers are not allowed in the pool.

-“Swimmies” diapers are required for all children who are not potty trained.

3. Admission requirements and facility schedules must be adhered to.

4. Children 8-10 years of age must be accompanied in the building by a parent or adult at least 18 years of age. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied in the water by an adult at all times. No exceptions.

5. Per public health code, all persons must shower before entering the pool. Any person known or suspected of having a communicable disease shall not use the pool.

6. The pool is not to be used unless there is a lifeguard on duty.

7. Per public health code, spitting or blowing the nose in the pool is prohibited.

8. Use of flotation equipment is limited to supervised classes and adults. Children will not be allowed to use flotation belts, face masks, snorkels, fins, water wings, inflatables, beach balls, kickboards, noodles, and other equipment during open swim sessions.

9. Any activity that may endanger patron safety or the facility including running, “horseplay”, hanging on the lane lines, or improper use of equipment, is not allowed.

10. Food and/or glass containers are not allowed in the pool or locker room areas. Plastic beverage bottles may be used on the pool deck.

11. Tobacco and alcohol products of any kind are not allowed in the facility or on facility grounds.

12. Bandages, bobby pins, or chewing gum are not to be used in the pool.

13. Visiting with or distracting lifeguards on duty is prohibited.

14. The Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to schedule swim lessons, swim meets, team practices, special events, and to limit swimmer capacity for health and safety reasons as needed.

15. Private swim lessons are not allowed at any time unless it is a Parks & Recreation sanctioned program.

16. Use of any media device, including but not limited to cameras, camcorders, and cell phones is strictly prohibited in all restrooms and locker rooms.

17. The Parks and Recreation Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items. If locks are used, they must be removed by the end of each business day or they will be cut off.

18. Spectators must remain in the bleacher area. For health and sanitation reasons, street shoes may not be worn on the pool deck.

19. Diving Board Use:

-Only one person on the diving board or ladder at a time.

-The fulcrum must remain in the forward-most position.

-Be sure that the pool area in front of and below the diving board is clear before diving or jumping.

-Do not swim in the area in front of the diving board when it is in use.

-All reverse and inverted dives are prohibited; forward motion only.

-Anyone using the diving board must be able to do so independently, including climbing the ladder, jumping off the board, and swimming safely to the side.

Yearly Schedule 2010-2011

Aqua Aerobics and Water Walking classes for adults are offered Monday through Thursday from 10:30-11:15 a.m. or from 6:15-7:00 p.m. Aqua Aerobics is held on Mondays and Wednesdays and Water Walking is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participants may select any combination of class type, days, and times at registration. Each session will consist of eight classes with the exception of those sessions containing holidays, which are noted below. Sessions with seven or eight classes will cost $20.00 and sessions with six classes will cost $15.00. These classes are comprised of a warm up, stretching, an aerobic period, muscle toning, and a cool down. Aqua Aerobics will contain a moderate to high intensity aerobic workout. Water Walking will contain a low to moderate intensity aerobic workout. Both classes will utilize flotation belts, resistance barbells and noodles, and may be conducted in both shallow and deep water.

Seasonal Programs

Guardstart:

This is an American Red Cross sponsored program for children between the ages of 11 and 14. Rescue skills, water safety information, and a general understanding of the qualities needed to be a lifeguard will be discussed. The class will run once a week for 8 weeks on Saturdays beginning November 13, 2010. Registration will begin on November 1. The fee is $30.00.

Lifeguard Training:

This course is taught using the American Red Cross guidelines and is for anyone 15 years of age or older. The prerequisites for this course include swimming 500 yards non-stop using two different strokes, retrieving a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool, and then swimming the length of the pool with it. Lifeguard Training certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification and First Aid certifications are given. Class schedule and registration date will be available in late November. The cost is $105.00 for Bristol residents and $140.00 for non-residents.

Water Sports:

This class is for middle school aged children. Its purpose is to expose them to various sports and activities associated with the aquatic environment. Registrations will begin in the winter. The cost is $25.00.

Water Safety Instructor:

This course is taught using the American Red Cross guidelines and is for anyone 16 years of age or older who has a desire to teach swimming lessons. The prerequisites include being at least level 4 in your swimming ability, being able to perform rescue techniques, and possessing the maturity relevant to the material being taught. The class includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training and will be held in the winter or the spring with the dates and times to be announced at a later time. The cost is $175.00 for Bristol residents and $190.00 for non-residents.

Water Safety Instructor Aide:

This class is for children or adults who are interested in learning about how swim lessons are taught or for anyone who would like to obtain their Water Safety Instructor certification but are either not 16 years of age or would like to gain a base understanding of swim instruction prior to taking the WSI course. Participants must possess maturity as well as a desire to assist instructors with their classes. Becoming a WSI Aide is also a great volunteer opportunity! This class will meet once a week for 8 weeks on Saturdays beginning on March 26, 2011. Registration will begin on March 14th. The fee is $30.00. Swim Clinic:

These clinics are geared toward the swimmer who is interested in refining techniques used in competitive swimming. These clinics are a great experience for swimmers who are interested in participating on the Swim Team. Try the clinic first to see if the Swim Team is for you. Registration will be held in the spring.

Splash Swim Team:

The Splash Swim Team is available for children ages 6 to 18 who meet the following requirements:

-Must be able to swim two lengths of the pool (50 yards) and must be able to perform at least two different competitive strokes.

Anyone who has not participated in the Fall/Winter Splash Team is asked to attend a placement and screening day with the coaches on Monday, September 13th from 5:30-6:10 pm to determine eligibility and grouping, (with the exception of participants who were on the 2010 Summer Splash Team). Anyone who has solely participated in the 2010 Summer Splash Team is asked to attend a placement day on Tuesday, September 14th from 5:30-6:10 pm. Practice will be held weekdays beginning on September 15th and will run through March. The cost is $125.00 plus the purchase of an annual pool membership. Participants will also have to pay for half of the cost of their competition swim suits, should they choose to purchase one. Registration will begin on August 30, 2010. Practice group schedules will be available after the first week of practice.

Swim Lesson Descriptions

Swim lessons are taught along the American Red Cross "Learn to Swim Program" guidelines. The classes run once a week for eight weeks on Saturdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The fee is $25.00. A description of classes that are offered is as follows:

(PCA 1) Parent & Child Aquatics 1: This class is for parents with children ages 6 months to 1 1/2 years. This is a water introduction class where comfort in the water and submerging are taught in a low pressure and fun environment. Water experimentation, blowing bubbles, and basic skills are instructed through songs and activities.

(PCA 2) Parent & Child Aquatics 2: This class is for children between the ages of 1 1/2 and 3 years. This class expands on some skills learned in the first course, but adds some more difficult skills such as floating, submersion, and gliding. This course is recommended before PSA 1.

(PSA 1) Pre-school Aquatics 1: This class teaches children the most elementary aquatic skills. They continue to develop safe practices around the water.

(PSA 2) Pre-school Aquatics 2: This class teaches independent aquatic locomotion skills. Children continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to gain more proficiency for future strokes.

(PSA 3) Pre-school Aquatics 3: This class teaches children to perform their skills independently. They are taught to improve coordination of combined arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions.

*All pre-school aquatics classes are intended for children 4-6 years old.*

(LTS 1) Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills- Exit from PCA is recommended. Children learn breath control, buoyancy on the front and back, alternating arm and leg action and general water safety rules.

(LTS 2) Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills- Exit from level 1 is recommended. Underwater swimming, treading water, swimming in different positions and general water safety are the main focus.

(LTS 3) Level 3: Stroke Development- Exit from level 2 is recommended. Head first entries, rotary breathing, changing directions and different kicks are taught.

(LTS 4) Level 4: Stroke Improvement- Exit from level 3 is recommended. Diving, surface diving, turns, breaststroke kick, elementary backstroke and scissor kicks are introduced.

(LTS 5) Level 5: Stroke Refinement- Exit from level 4 is recommended. Head first surface dives, flip turns and survival swimming are taught. All other skills are refined.

(LTS 6) Level 6: There are three different sections:

1. Personal Water Safety- Focuses on endurance and safety in and around the water in addition to the core skills.

2. Fundamentals of Diving- Focuses on deck and springboard diving in addition to the core skills.

3. Fitness Swimmer- Focuses on endurance as it pertains to using the water as a medium for exercise in addition

to the core skills.

Adult Small Group Lessons:

This class if offered for adults with any level of swimming ability from non swimmer to intermediate. This class is designed around the goals of the individual to make swimming more enjoyable. Adult small group swim lessons run once a week for eight weeks on Saturdays beginning September 11, 2010. Registration will begin on August 30th and is taken on a first come, first serve basis. The fee is $25.00

Specialized Swim Lessons:

This class is designed to accommodate the individual with special needs or circumstances. The instructor will work with the student to accomplish individual goals. Any Bristol resident with special needs is welcome. For more information on participant eligibility, contact the Aquatics Director at (860) 584-3836. This class runs once a week for 8 weeks on Saturdays beginning on September 11, 2010. Registration will begin on August 30th and is taken on a first come, first serve basis. The fee is $25.00.

Non-Bristol residents may be permitted to register for swim lessons including adult and specialized on the day before the start of lessons if classes are not full. Please call or come to the Dennis Malone Aquatic Center to check on availability.

Special Events

The pool can be rented out for special events such as birthday parties by contacting the front desk at (860) 584- 3837. The pool is available for rental on the weekends beginning at 6:00 p.m. The rental includes lifeguards, changing rooms, and use of the lobby for food and drinks. The rental fee is $100.00 per hour for time spent in the facility plus a one-time fee of $40.00 for maintenance.

The pool will also be closed any time there is a thunderstorm. To find out if we are open during snowstorms, watch for closings on the news channels, or call the pool at (860) 584-3837. If school is closed due to inclement weather, the pool will open at 12:00 p.m. unless otherwise stated.
