Recycling Information

The City of Bristol collects recycling for Bristol residential properties that qualify for curbside rubbish collection. This applies to Bristol residential properties containing one dwelling unit but not more than five units. This does not include businesses, hospitals, motels or hotels, apartment buildings, nursing centers, condominiums, or dwellings on private roads unless authorized by the Board of Public Works.

To learn about recycling options for non-residential properties, please click here.

Recycling is collected curbside every other week on the day after your rubbish collection (Friday rubbish collection has Monday recycle collection). Click here to look up your recycle collection day by street.

Recycle reminder calendars are available below. Check the schedule above, find your street and note the route shown in the "Comments" column.  (Each day of the week has 2 routes, an A Route, and a B Route for alternating weeks.) Determine which route is yours, then click on the corresponding reminder calendar below to open and print it.

The entire City is now on Single Stream Recycling. This means that you can put all recyclable materials together in the same barrel/bin. There is no need to separate papers from cans and bottles or other materials.

Recycle Containers:
Red and blue pails are no longer required for recycling. Glass, cans, plastics and papers do not have to be separated and can now go in the same container. If you still have red or blue pails - they can be used to bring your recyclables to the curb. You may also use other containers for recyclables, old laundry baskets and kitchen sized plastic trash bins make good recycle containers - just mark them Recycle and make sure they aren't too heavy to lift into the truck.

Large Blue Barrels:
The City currently has several areas using single stream recycle barrels for recycling. These neighborhoods use blue rolling barrels (like the City issued rubbish barrels) for all recycleable materials.

We are very excited about the increased recycling results from these areas.  We hope to expand the use of recycle barrels to other neighborhoods once we have the funding to purchase additional blue barrels.

Please place your recycle container(s) at the curb by 6:00 AM on your recycling collection day.

Click here for information on containers you can use, and a quick reference of recyclable materials.

Holidays:

Recycling will be collected on your scheduled recycling day unless a public holiday falls on or before your collection day. In this situation, your recycling and rubbish collection day will be one day after your normal recycle day. The City observes the following holidays:

New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. City Hall is also closed the day after Thanksgiving Day, but we typically still collect curbside rubbish and recycling on this day.

Materials Collected:

Clean glass and metal food containers
Plastics #1 through #7 food & beverage containers. *Not those that contained motor oil, pesticides, antifreeze or toxic fluids.*
Plastics should be rinsed, flattened, and placed in the recycle bin/barrel.
Newspapers/magazines/catalogues/junk mail/phone books/soft cover books/boxboard & paperboard (cereal boxes, shoe boxes, etc) - place in barrel/bin.  Shredded paper can also be recycled, please place it in a paper bag.
Paper milk/juice cartons and Juice boxes - Remove straws and caps, rinse, and flatten.  Corrugated cardboard - flatten, cut to 2' x 3' maximum, place in barrel or on edge between recycling buckets. Do not tie or tape. (Please do not use boxes for holding trash.)
