Coming to Bristol in 2012

Pay As You Throw (PAYT), also known as SMART (Save Money and Reduce Trash).

Bristol residents will begin Pay As You Throw in 2012 at the City's Transfer Station.

New five-year permits are now available at City Hall.

WHY PAYT? To equalize the cost of using the transfer station. Average users who visit the transfer station a few times a year will likely save money, although frequent users will see an increase in fees equivalent to how often they use the facility.

Pay As You Throw will charge a set fee for disposal of certain items. Rates have not been set yet. Now that new permits and reader are ready, we will collect data that will be used to assist us in setting rates. The new permits use RFID technology (similar to the EZ Pass system) and we can now determine the size of the average load and data about the type and frequency of materials entering the Transfer Station.

The new permits will be automatically read by a scanner when you enter the Transfer Station. Some vehicles have special windshields that contain metal (metal oxide) in the glass which may prevent the permit from being read, please let us know if you have one of these. (Buick Roadmaster - all years, 99-01 Cadillac Catera, Chevrolet Lumina Van and Venture - Prior to 2002, Ford Crown Victoria (87-94) and Taurus (prior to 1995) with heated windshields, Oldsmobile Silhouette prior to 2002, Pontiac Trans Sport & Montana prior to 2002 and Subaru SVX - all years)

Your vehicle will be weighed upon entrance to the Transfer Station and again upon exiting to determine the weight of items disposed of.

Residents will create accounts for the Transfer Station and will have the cost of each delivery debited from their account.
