WATER POLLUTION CONTROL FACILITY

The wastewater flow enters the Facility in the Headworks Building (in the top right corner) flows to the three 80 foot diameter Primary Clarifier settling tanks. The four Screw Pumps ( in the right center) lift the water from the Primary clarifiers up into the six square aeration / nitrification tanks. Each of the six tanks hold one half a million gallon of wastewater. Here the water is mixed with microscopic organisms and air. The organisms bring the small waste particles together into larger particles and begin to digest the waste. The water then flows to the three 110 foot diameter secondary clarifiers (bottom) were these larger particles and the organisms settle out of the flow stream. The reclaimed water finally flows through an ultraviolet disinfection system in the basement of the Operations Building (center). The reclaimed water, having been treated to 94 % removal standard, rendered safe for aquatic life is then discharged to the Pequabuck River.  (Aerial photography by Albert Emmert)
