The Bristol Police Department was officially established in 1911 and currently is comprised of 153 employees. This includes 127 sworn police officers and a support staff of 26 civilian personnel. The civilian employees include police dispatchers, records and maintenance personnel. In 2008, police had more than 58,000 calls for service in the community. The men and women who make up the department take a special pride in helping to make Bristol a safe place to live, work and visit.

The department serves a community of approximately 65,000 residents and safeguards an area of 27 square miles. Bristol is in Hartford County and is located approximately 17 miles west of Hartford and 36 miles south of Springfield Massachusetts. Bristol is the ninth largest city in Connecticut and has a diverse population. It is the home of ESPN and the oldest amusement park in the country - Lake Compounce. Bristol offers museums, parks and athletic fields for recreation. Some of the museums include the American Clock & Watch Museum, the New England Carousel Museum and the Imagine Nation Childrens Museum.

The Chief of Police, John DiVenere is the department leader and the Board of Police Commission governs the general supervision of the department. Link to Police Commission.

Two police divisions fall under the chief of police – the Patrol Services Bureau and the Administrative Services Bureau. Each bureau is commanded by a police captain. Link to Table of Organization.

Under each bureau, there are divisions that are commanded by a police lieutenant. The divisions in the Patrol Services Bureau include the Patrol Division, Traffic Division and the Communication Division. The divisions in the Administrative Bureau include the Criminal Investigation Division, Records Division, Community Relations, Training Division and Scheduling. Link to Command Staff.

Various units fall under each division and some are supervised by sergeants. These include patrol and school resource officers, civilians, animal control, youth services, code enforcement, technology, court liaison and the various criminal investigative units.

All of the members of the Bristol Police Department strive to provide the highest level of professional service to the residents and visitors in the community.
