The Bristol Police Department Traffic Division falls under the Patrol Services Bureau and is headed by Lieutenant Kevin Morrell. The Traffic Division plays a major role in the operation of the Bristol Police Department. Three fulltime police officers are also assigned to this division. The goal of the Traffic Division is to help reduce traffic crashes and injuries throughout the city. While proactive police enforcement is a tool for helping to achieve this goal, voluntary compliance from the public is the ultimate goal!

The traffic officers receive advanced training in areas such as accident investigation and reconstruction, DWI enforcement and photography. The officers make use of laser units for speed enforcement and the Radar Speed Trailer to give drivers instant feedback on how fast they are traveling. Computerized equipment is used to reconstruct accident scenes and plot accident diagrams.

S.T.A.R.T. (Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team) is a unit within the Traffic Division. Members of this unit respond to crashes where serious injuries have occurred. These members also have specialized training in accident investigation and reconstruction.

The division keeps busy with other activities and responsibilities. Federal and state grants are actively sought that help to enhance traffic safety in the community. These include DWI and Click it or Ticket campaign grants. Upon request, a traffic officer will help to ensure that child safety seats are installed properly. The division also reviews commercial building plans and other developments that may have an impact on traffic and are a concern for the public. The Traffic Divisions’ Maintenance unit is charged with servicing approximately 60 vehicles in the police fleet and the local traffic control signals that are spread throughout the city.

For additional information, contact the Traffic Division.
