The Bristol Police Department endeavors to hire the most qualified applicants to become police officers in our city. Testing is a thorough and rigorous process. The Bristol Personnel Department conducts a written test for these positions approximately every two years or until the current eligibility list is exhausted. Applications are accepted in the Personnel Department on an ongoing basis.
Before applying for a police officer position, you must meet the following qualifications: a citizen of the United States, at least 21 years of age, a high school graduate or have a GED. You must also possess a valid motor vehicle license.
If you meet the initial qualifications, fill out an job application with the City of Bristol Personnel Department. For a police application, CLICK HERE. The initial testing process consist of a physical ability test CHIP, a written examination, and an oral examination. Once an applicant has successfully completed these phases, their name is placed on an eligibility list for future openings. When there is an opening, the vacancy is filled from the eligibility list.
If the applicant is chosen from the list, they will be fingerprinted and a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted. During the process, the applicant will be the subject of a polygraph examination, psychological examination and participate in another oral interview.
If hired by the City of Bristol, the recruit is considered a probationary candidate and will be required to attend the 21-week training program at the Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POST). For information on the police training at POST, CLICK LINK.
Upon successful completion of all portions of the POST program, the recruit is issued an initial certification as a police officer in the State of Connecticut. The recruit will return to the Bristol Police Department and be placed in a 12-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program. The recruit must successfully pass the FTO program and will remain on a probationary status for 18 months. Some of the speciality assignments include DARE, Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team (START), Emergency Response Team (ERT), Youth Grants, Crime Watch, Explorer Scout Advisor, Quad Patrol, K-9 Assignment, School Resource Officer, Crime Suppression Unit, Court Liaison, DWI Patrols, Women’s Safety Program, Color Guard, Citizen Police Academy and Technology.
