Food Distribution Opportunities

The City of Bristol, in conjunction with the United Way of West Central CT, is hosting a second Farms to Families food box distribution on Friday, October 16th at the Lake Compounce parking lot. “We know that the lines were long on October 2nd when we moved the event to Lake Compounce,” said Donna Osuch, President of the United Way. “We have made changes so that we will have 2 lanes of distribution in order to move the traffic along.”

“We have also asked for an additional truck for October 16th,” said Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu. “Demand was high and we were worried over there would not be enough,” she said. “Gates were closed at 5pm to ensure that the people who had been waiting in line for a significant amount of time so would receive a box.”

The Mayor’s Office, The Bristol Hunger Action Team and FoodShare wish to remind the community of various mobile Foodshare locations in and around Bristol.

Mobile Foodshare brings perishable foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and bread directly to people in need. The service is available to everyone 16 years or older and no identification is required. Trucks with these food items visit each site every two weeks and interested parties are reminded to bring their own grocery or tote bags.

“The FoodShare program is extremely important to members of our community, who have been adversely affected during the pandemic,” said Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu. “The program has helped bridge the gap for many who were laid off or are currently unemployed.”

“Bristol’s two locations (Gaylord/JFK Towers on Gaylord Street and Cambridge Park off of Jerome Ave) have been very effective providing individuals with food necessities,” said Councilwoman Mary Fortier. “There are other locations in neighboring towns as shown in the graph.”
