About Public Works
Services & Responsibilities
Public Works provides a wide array of services including street maintenance, tree and roadside maintenance, solid waste (rubbish) and recycling collection, leaf and branch collection, maintenance of municipal vehicles and equipment, winter snow and ice control, and wastewater collection and treatment.
The Public Works Department also maintains most municipal buildings and provides engineering services in the form of design, site plan review, and construction administration for Public Works projects, other municipal departments and the city's four Land Use Boards.
Ongoing department programs include annual crack sealing, road pavement and resurfacing, and a sidewalk repair program. The Department of Public Works is under the policy direction of the Board of Public Works. By Charter, the mayor is the chairperson. The mayor appoints three council persons for their terms of office, and three private citizens are appointed for three years in staggered terms.
The Public Works Department endeavors to preserve and enhance the social and environmental quality of life in the City of Bristol. This is accomplished through the delivery of services designed to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of its citizens and to maintain and improve the city's infrastructure in an effective, efficient, and professional manner.
